Local election

Local Elections will take place in Gateshead on Thursday 2 May 2024. The election will take place to elect Councillors (one per ward) to Gateshead Council.

Gateshead has 66 councillors, three representing each of the 22 wards in the borough. At a local election one seat in every ward is contested.

Police and Crime Commissioner election

Sunderland City Council are the lead authority for the Police and Crime Commissioner election. Their Returning Officer is the Police Area Returning Officer (PARO) for the Northumbria Police Area. The PARO is responsible for the overall conduct of the Police and Crime Commissioner Election and specifically their role includes, publishing the Notice of Election, the nomination process and liaising with candidates and agents and the collation of the election result following the verification and counting of votes across the police area and the declaration of result.

The list of local authorities that make up the Northumbria Police area are Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The Local Returning Officer in each of these areas is responsible for conducting the election in their area.

North East Mayoral Combined Authority election

An election is to be held on Thursday 2 May 2024 for a combined authority mayor for the North East Mayoral Combined Authority.

People who are registered to vote in local elections for any of the seven constituent councils of County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland are eligible to vote in this election.
