Following the success of Gateshead Council's Angel Adventures in 2018, knitted Angels of the North will once again be going on their travels with local school children.

Members of Gateshead Central Library knitting group, who meet regularly in Gateshead libraries, and the Art Diamonds have been excitedly knitting silver Angels to mark the iconic landmark's 25th birthday in February of this year.

Each primary and special school in Gateshead will receive their very own Angel of the North giving children across the borough the opportunity to take it on an adventure and then share photographs/videos of what their visitor has been up to.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: "We are always looking for new ways to celebrate the Angel of the North's key milestones and it's really important to us that everyone can get involved."

"This year, to mark the 25th birthday, we wanted people to think about Angel Views - what can the Angel see, where can you see the Angel from and if you had your own Angel where would you take it. I'm very grateful to all of our knitters who once again have made this possible for our young people and I can't wait to see where they take their Angel for an adventure - the more unusual the better."

One of the knitters involved with the project said: "I remember when the Angel was installed so it was lovely to replicate this iconic sculpture and be involved in its 25th anniversary."

More than 90 Angels of the North have been knitted and will be distributed to primary schools in the borough this month. It is hoped children will now share their Angel Adventures with their classmates before their teachers share them more widely on social media and with Gateshead Council.

Other people can also get involved by sharing their favourite or unusual Angel views with Gateshead Council on the Gateshead Alive Facebook or Instagram page using #AngelViews25.
