Warning of lane closures on Gateshead flyover

south end of Gateshead flyover

A section of the Gateshead flyover will be reduced to a single carriageway in the New Year to allow essential repairs to be made to the central safety barriers.

The outside lane at the Durham Road end of the flyover will be closed to traffic in both directions while around 250m of badly corroded crash barriers are replaced. The inside lane will remain open.

Work to replace the barriers will begin on Monday 4 January and is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete.

Recent inspections have led to concerns about the structural integrity of the safety barriers in the event of an accident, with particular concerns about the corrosion to the metal posts supporting the barrier.

The repair work is likely to cause some traffic delays especially during the morning peak and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes or allow more time for their journey. The work will be carried out as quickly and as safely as possible.

We apologise for any inconvenience these essential repairs may cause.
