Gateshead business Northern Gas and Power donates £40,000 to Spirit of Christmas appeal

A global energy company is the latest business to donate to the Spirit of Christmas Appeal.
Northern Gas and Power, based on Gateshead Quays, has generously donated £40,000 to Newcastle and Gateshead's Spirit of Christmas Appeal . £20,000 of that total was a personal donation by the company's CEO, Fokhrul Islam.
Connected Voice has partnered with Gateshead Council and Newcastle City Council to raise money from local businesses and residents through the appeal. Every penny raised will be given to local charities to help people and families who need it the most this Christmas.
Fokhrul said:
"I feel lucky to be the CEO of one of the fastest-growing businesses in Britain, and extremely lucky to be based in Gateshead. In 2015, with just a handful of us, and on our last attempt to find office accommodation , we approached Gateshead Council to discuss locating here. Their support from the start of our journey through to the present day has been instrumental to our success.
"The backing we received from Gateshead Council has been invaluable and we are all very humbled by the support and hospitality that the Council and its residents have shown to us. We are very lucky to have our HQ based here.
"Northern Gas and Power and I would therefore like to try and repay the hospitality shown to us by supporting the #SpiritOfChristmas which is raising money to support residents in Gateshead and Newcastle who are in desperate need at this time.
"I will personally donate £20,000 to this worthy cause and Northern Gas and Power will match this donation with another £20,000, a total of £40,000. I encourage all staff of NGP and local businesses to donate whatever they can, as every little contribution will help."
Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council said:
"We appreciate that this time of the year is a challenge for every family and following the pandemic it is even more so.
"We would like to personally thank Fokhrul and the team at Northern Gas and Power for their kind words and for this extremely generous donation. We're delighted that they remain committed to Gateshead, most recently taking up 30,000 square feet of space at our new Grade A office space, Riga and with that bringing an additional much needed 200 jobs.
"We understand it's a difficult time for businesses but if you can make a donation or a personal contribution we would really appreciate it."
