Gateshead Council shows support for live event sector

Gateshead International Stadium

With new restrictions recently imposed on the region to help control the surge in coronavirus cases, Gateshead Council are supporting a worldwide initiative aimed at paving the way for the return of live events as soon as it is safe to do so by lighting Gateshead International Stadium in red tonight, Wednesday 30 September in solidarity with the #WeMakeEvents campaign.

#WeMakeEvents is a campaign run by a collection of trade bodies, businesses and freelancers representing the live events sector and its aim is raise awareness of the need to sustain the supply chain that helps deliver so many of the concerts, festivals, exhibitions and shows we all know and love until such time as they are able to resume.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Gateshead Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure said:

"The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has impacted so many of us and we long for the day when the events that bring us so much joy can return. Within Gateshead we have many outstanding indoor and outdoor live event spaces that over the years have helped local residents create so many precious memories. In acknowledgement of a much larger global movement aimed at supporting event venues and organisers through these challenging times, we are lighting the stadium in red tonight."

Look out for Gateshead International Stadium being illuminated red from 8pm this evening.
