Coronavirus mobile testing unit delayed

Coronavirus - book a test

The coronavirus mobile testing unit, planned for Regent Court car park in Gateshead on Saturday 12 September, did not arrive on site as planned. The unit, co-ordinated by Sodexo, has been delayed by a day with appointments diverted to other test centres.

Leader of Gateshead Council, Councillor Martin Gannon, said: "Testing is a critical part of the Government's measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus. As cases rise and with Gateshead now on the watch list as an area of concern, testing is more important than ever. We are extremely frustrated that we have been put in this situation.

This shows the continuous challenges that local authorities face when dealing with a national testing system which we have no control over. We have been saying for months that testing solutions need to be invested in at a local level."

All those who had booked an appointment for a test have now been directed to nearby testing facilities in Newcastle. The unit will now be in place from Sunday 13 September.

Tests are referred through the national testing bookings system. The site will not be able to handle walk-ins.

Anyone showing coronavirus symptoms can book a test online or by calling 119.
