'Cycle September' bike rides to take place throughout Gateshead

Cycling

A series of bike rides have been announced to take place throughout Gateshead as part of 'Cycle September', an initiative by cycling charity Love To Ride and Gateshead Council to encourage more people to cycle.

Rides include a series of guided rides throughout Gateshead, with the Big Local Gateshead project, and in Chopwell Woods, suitable for beginner and regular cyclists aged over 16.

Rides at Chopwell Woods take places on Saturdays 12, 20 and 27 September from 9.30am - 10:30am and 11am - 12noon. Rides must be pre-booked on Eventbrite or by calling 07771 885 084.

Lucy Brenkley from Forestry England said "This is a great opportunity for people to come and experience Chopwell Woods in a different way, as well as having the security of cycling on closed, traffic-free paths. The rides will be led by professional cycle guides, the groups will be a maximum of five people and are suitable for cyclists of any ability. We will also be providing bikes, helmets and equipment for people to loan for free for the duration of the sessions - making it accessible for everybody."

There are also rides organised by Big Local Gateshead for cyclists of different abilities on Wednesdays (10 miles for beginners), Fridays (30 miles for those who like a challenge) and Sundays at 10am (20 miles for intermediate riders). Rides start from the Big Local Bungalow on Derwentwater Road, next to the Teams Club car park.

Chris Folwell from Big Local Gateshead said: "Our club is run by volunteers and is a really welcoming environment for new cyclists, all we ask for is a £1 optional donation, if possible, towards the club on each ride. We also provide bikes and helmets for people to loan during the rides if they don't have their own. You don't need to pre-register for our rides just turn up on the day, although if it is your first time please arrive 20 minutes early for registration."
