Appeal to Gateshead businesses to follow Government guidance

Businesses flouting Covid rules could be closed down to protect Gateshead from a local lockdown.

Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, has today written to all business across Gateshead to appeal for their help in keeping coronavirus under control.

As the borough experiences a sharp rise in the number of positive cases, including a number of cases associated with local pubs and restaurants, businesses are being reminded of the steps that they need to take to protect their customers and staff.

Councillor Gannon said: "We appreciate that the vast majority of business owners are doing their utmost to help minimise the risk of transmission, however, we are asking everyone not to get complacent.

"Businesses failing to comply with Covid guidelines are not only risking public health but also the continued operation of the hospitality sector in Gateshead. Closing businesses is the last thing that we want to do - it will impact on owners, employees and customers - however, if a business fails to comply then we won't hesitate to take enforcement action."

Residents are also being asked not to let their guard down and to share any concerns that they have if they feel that a business is not following the rules. Any concerns can be reported to Gateshead's Environmental Health team.

Report any coronavirus concerns

Councillor Gannon continued: "As a Council we are taking every step to protect our communities, keep frontline services running and support our most vulnerable residents. We are delighted to see that children are returning to school and business have reopened.

"However, with these changes, comes responsibility for our part in keeping transmission of Covid-19 as low as possible. I ask that all businesses to do their bit and help us to keep Gateshead open for business."

Businesses are required to:

  • Have Covid secure measures in place -this includes ensuring social distancing, providing hand-washing facilities, maintaining cleaning regimes and establishing systems for staff training and supervision to ensure these measures are in place whether customers are present or not.
  • Keep records for Test and Trace
  • Immediately report Covid-19 cases: by calling 0300 303 8596 and emailing covidoutbreak@gateshead.gov.uk
