Family activities and food 2021

Free activities for Gateshead families

We are delighted to be able to provide free activities for children and families during the school holidays, thanks to Government Funding from the Department for Education's Holiday Activities and Food Programme.

This year's #BrightentheDay programme builds on many years of work across Gateshead to provide much needed food and activities during the summer holidays. We have worked closely with our partners, including schools, local charities and community organisations to plan a programme of activities, many of which are accessible to all families in Gateshead.

Below you will find links to outdoor activities that are available to Gateshead families, some of which are available to book online. The activities range from bike rides and nature walks to healthy cooking ideas and much more. We understand that it has been a difficult time for all families, and we hope that by providing these activities we can help you enjoy the summer holiday period.

You can get in touch with us by emailing brightentheday@gateshead.gov.uk

Summer reading challenge

Children are being encouraged to go wild for reading this summer by joining the hugely popular annual Summer Reading Challenge, taking place at all Gateshead Council libraries from 10 July until 4 September. This year's challenge is 'Wild World Heroes' and is aimed at encouraging children aged four to 11 years to engage in fun reading activities focused on real world environmental issues, such as climate change, wildlife decline, plastic pollution, and deforestation.
