Residents to 'Ring and Read' for books

Ring and Read

From Monday 6 July Gateshead residents will be able to borrow books from libraries across the borough with the new Ring and Read service.

Libraries have been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic but have continued to provide valuable digital services. Although libraries are unable to open fully at this time Ring and Read will give residents the opportunity to borrow books for the first time since lockdown started.

Residents will be able to contact the library and choose which genres they would like to read. A selection of books will be chosen, which can then be collected at an agreed time or delivered to your doorstep if you are shielding.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said "Our libraries have been fantastic throughout lockdown with great online activities. However we know how much residents have missed visiting their local library so it's fantastic that people will be able to use Ring and Read to start borrowing books again.

"Although we're unable to fully open our libraries straight away we're working hard to ensure we can minimise risk for customers and employees and we're looking forward to being able to reintroduce our libraries offer when it is safe to do so."
