Redheugh Bridge closed for maintenance this weekend

Major repair works to the structure of the Redheugh Bridge will see the bridge closed to all traffic starting this weekend.

Work to replace the four major expansion joints on the Redheugh Bridge will mean the whole bridge will have to close to traffic as removing the joints will leave substantial gaps in the carriageway which traffic would not be able to cross. Pedestrians will be able to use the existing footway though there may be temporary diversions.

The first bridge closure will be from 8pm on Friday February 14 until 6am Monday February 17, with the second closure starting at 8pm on Friday February 22 and ending at 6am on Monday February 24. The work was due to start last weekend but was cancelled due to the onset of Storm Ciara. Work will be going ahead this weekend but is still subject to any changing weather conditions which may make conditions hazardous for those working on the bridge.

During the closures, motorists will be diverted over the Tyne Bridge which may increase journey times. To ensure the work is completed on schedule the contractor will be employing six gangs to ensure 24 hour operation at two locations each weekend.

The bridge's expansion joints were last replaced in 2004 and recent inspections showed that the expansion joints have now come to the end of their serviceable life. The bridge carries the A189 over the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead.

Routine and planned maintenance of the Redheugh Bridge will also be carried out during the closures to minimise future traffic disruption. As some of the works are being undertaken at night it is likely there will be some noise disturbance to nearby premises, though efforts will be made to minimise this as far as possible.

We apologise for any inconvenience these essential works will cause.
