A new way to view Gateshead's past

Gateshead Archive has now opened at Gateshead Central Library which offers visitors an exciting new way to view the unique local history collection held by the Council.

Gateshead Archive will showcase thousands of local history books, historic maps, photos and newspapers alongside displays, touchscreen terminals and study space that can be used by individuals or groups.

Councillor Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said "This is an amazing new space for Gateshead Central Library. Gateshead Archive offers people a fantastic opportunity to see our local history and family history collections. With study space, free wi-fi and staff on hand to help with queries it's a great place to trace your family tree or learn more about the town.

"Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund we can now truly celebrate Gateshead's history and heritage with all of our visitors."

Throughout the course of the year events will be organised to celebrate local history. With a history festival, a historic interactive drama and creative workshops there will be something for everyone to take part in.

Gateshead Council secured £499,200 of funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to create the Gateshead Archive.
