Gateshead resident joins birthday celebrations

18th birthday bridge tilt

One lucky Gateshead resident was chosen to tilt Gateshead Millennium Bridge as part of it's 18th birthday celebrations.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge, which opened to the public on 17 September 2001, has become one of Tyneside's most popular tourist attractions. In order to mark this milestone members of the public were invited to share their memories and images of the iconic bridge. Rebecca Dixon, who lives with her family in Gateshead, was chosen to press the button to tilt the bridge for this special occasion having shared her memories of the bridge's arrival on the Tyne.

Rebecca said "I have lived in Newcastle and Gateshead since September 2000 when I moved here to go to university. I watched the Millennium Bridge be installed from the vantage point of my top floor flat in my halls of residence and remember the buzz of the first time it tilted when it was all new.

"I'm really excited to get the opportunity to make the bridge tilt myself, it'll be quite a story to have."

Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the world's first tilting bridge has won many awards including the RIBA Stirling Prize. It has also appeared on a £1 coin and featured on a postage stamp.
