This autumn people in Gateshead have the chance to explore interesting and quirky heritage sites on their doorstep - for free!

Every September Heritage Open Days allows people a chance to explore, discover and travel around the many favourite places in their local area. There is free access to many sites which usually charge for admission with some venues offering special tours and activities.

This year is the 25th anniversary and to celebrate there are 10 days of events on offer to the public around the Borough.

Some of the highlights in Gateshead include:

  • Saturday 21 September 11am

Headstones and Heritage Guided Tour, St Mary's Heritage Centre

Once Gateshead's 'mother church' this is the oldest building on the Quayside holding lots of important historical artefacts and culture. A 90-minute tour is available, to book call 0191 433 8420.

  • Saturday 14 and 21 September 10am-8pm and Sunday 15 and 22 September 10am-5pm

Dunston Staiths

Catch the sunset and fabulous unique views over the River Tyne from this urban pier which is opening later. Partially restored and a great place to a spot wildlife, this iconic structure is being transformed into a sustainable visitor attraction.

  • Saturday 14 September at 2pm and Tuesday 17 September at 1pm

Saltwell Park Heritage Walk is a fantastic opportunity for family and fitness due to the 45-minute history walk focusing on many historical points of interest which include the Salte Welle and the towers which is home to a café. Pre-booking is required on 0191 482 2695, however, the park itself is available to explore without pre-booking.

  • Sunday 22 September 10-4pm

Bensham Grove Community Centre, Sidney Grove, NE8 2XD. Bustling with arts and crafts both from the early Victorians, 1930s art to present day which are on display, the centre also boasts a beautiful garden. Tours and refreshments are available.
