Play equipment in Birtley's Grove Park gets a refresh

New swing in park

Work is underway on replacing old play equipment at a popular play park in Birtley.

The old play equipment at Grove Park - which no longer meets present day standards - has already been removed and work is underway on installing a new range of wooden equipment.

The work had originally been scheduled to begin after the school summer holidays. However, the existing play equipment was so old that the replacement programme was brought forward.

A cantilever swing has already been installed and work to install a snail house, which doubles as a climbing frame and a slide, is currently underway. New cradle swings are also set to be fitted after the main supporting frame was installed this week. Workers are now awaiting a delivery of fresh bark chippings to ensure that the area is safe for small children to use.

Other play equipment to be installed include a dish roundabout, stepping logs, balance beam, a seesaw and two springers. Bench seating for parents is also being provided. It's hoped that the work will be completed by the end of September.

The new-look play park will see play equipment for juniors and toddlers brought together onto a single site instead of having separate sites for each. This will help to limit any potential disturbance to neighbouring residents and will improve children's safeguarding by improving visibility.

Play surfaces will also be refreshed as part of the replacement work.
