Central Library by day

Works are due to start next week at Gateshead Central Library to create exciting new visitor spaces for the local history collection and creative digital activities.

The building works mean that from Tuesday 3 September there will be:

  • temporary computer facilities in the Sound Gallery - please book in advance to ensure availability
  • space available for study and laptop use, use upstairs whenever possible
  • limited access to the local history collection, please check ahead to see what is available
  • daily newspapers available in the library
  • a reduced gift shop, please ask for any items not on display

The works are expected to be completed by the new year.

Gateshead Archive will showcase thousands of books, maps, newspapers and images from Gateshead's past through displays, touchscreen terminals and a study space suitable for individuals or groups. A new events programme, including a touring exhibition, will be held in community venues, allowing people across the borough to experience the Archive.

The Council secured £499,200 National Lottery funding to help deliver this project.

For further information and updates, please ask a member of staff at the library or phone 0191 433 8420.
