Researchers at the University of Liverpool have concluded that one of the healthiest places to live in the UK is... Ryton!

The village in the west of Gateshead was ranked 6th in the top ten healthiest places to live in Britain.

Eight of the top ten healthiest places were in Scotland, with first-placed Great Torrington in Devon being the only other 'healthy' location in England.

Each area was judged on the availability of unhealthy fast food, the numbers of pubs and off-licences, the availability of health services and on people's access to open spaces.

University researchers worked with the UK's Consumer Data Research Centre and Public Health England to pull together a range of public data such as air pollution statistics from the Environment Agency and information from GP surgeries and health centres.

Ryton made it into the top ten healthiest places in Britain due to its low levels of pollution, abundance of green spaces, good access to health services and low numbers of unhealthy hot food takeaways.

The country's least healthy neighbourhood to live in is Soho in London's West End. Out of the top ten most unhealthy neighbourhoods in Britain, no less than six were in Central London.
