Investing in our economy to provide sustainable opportunities for employment, innovation and growth

Economy
We are supporting a range of activities to stimulate economic growth in Gateshead.

Attracting more and better paid jobs and improving skills can boost the proportion of working age residents and encourage economic growth through more people in work.

1.   Capital Programme

W are working in partnership with award-winning property developer Ask Real Estate and leading investment and development manager PATRIZIA UK to bring forward a £250m scheme creating a vibrant new destination on the banks of the River Tyne waterfront at Gateshead Quays.

Located directly opposite the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and between the iconic buildings of Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, the four-hectare site will be transformed to incorporate a state-of-the-art, 12,500 seat entertainment arena, a regional convention and exhibition centre as well as hotels, restaurants and extensive public open space connecting the Quays to Gateshead town centre.

Gateshead Quays is anticipated to support more than 1,140 jobs and attract an extra 296,000 visitors to the region. It's estimated to boost the regional economy by over £29.5 million annually in future years.

2.   Innovation

PROTO: The Emerging Technology Centre (opens new window) officially opened in September 2018. The first of its kind in Europe, PROTO is specialist state-of-the-art technology centre and the North East's new home for innovation.

Since opening, 94% of the office space has been leased by emerging technology companies and it has won 'Project of the Year' at the Dynamites tech sector awards.

Delegations from Sweden, Canada and India have expressed an interest in the kit and facilities which are available for hire and it was chosen as one of three places to visit by HRH Duke of Cambridge during The Great Exhibition of the North.

3.   Employment

Our economic development team have been working with partners Gateshead College, Northumbria University and Job Centre Plus to launch a programme to help Gateshead residents access employment.

The free, confidential service provides access to vacancies across a vast number of organisations in Gateshead, sector specific training, work experience placements as well as careers advice, CV advice and interview preparation.
