£1.8 million to boost development of new homes in Gateshead

Clasper Village

Homes England has agreed a £1.8million funding deal with Gateshead Council. The funding has been awarded through the Government's £450 million Local Authority Accelerated Construction Programme (LAAC).

Clasper Village is a 12 acre site to the west of Gateshead town centre. The Council is developing this brownfield site for family housing and apartments to meet demand and broaden the housing offer within Gateshead.

The Council has already invested significantly in the Clasper Village site, including funding the demolition costs. The surrounding area has also benefitted from extensive redevelopment of housing along the riverside at Dunston Staithes as well as significant economic and cultural investment to the Gateshead Quays area.

The LAAC grant funding will contribute towards site remediation and provision of necessary infrastructure to enable development of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses as well as 2 bedroom apartments.

The Chief Executive, Sheena Ramsey, said: "Delivering the homes Gateshead needs is a crucial element of our plan to make the borough a place where everyone thrives. We're thrilled that this funding means work can move forward rapidly at our Clasper Village site to provide homes for hundreds of families.

"Clasper Village's £30 million transformation will be a game-changer for the borough's economy in terms of new homes, construction jobs and growth and is part of an ambitious programme of house building we have planned in Gateshead. It's fantastic to have the support of Homes England as we transform and invest in the borough."

Stephen Kinsella, Executive Director for Land at Homes England said: "This funding will enable Gateshead Council to accelerate their plans by enabling them to prepare this site for development and bringing forward the construction of much needed new homes."
