Tutor named Maths Teacher of the Year

Sarah Richardson

Gateshead Council's Learning Skills Tutor Sarah Richardson has won Maths Teacher of the Year 2019 at the BKSB Skills Awards this week.

Sarah, who is Curriculum Lead with the Skills for Life Team, was one of six teachers shortlisted in this category from a variety of colleges and learning providers from across the UK.

Sarah teaches all levels of Functional Skills and GCSE and has outstanding results for her pupils. She was nominated by colleagues who say "she is an exceptional tutor who not only has a tremendous capacity for work; she also works hard to support the wider team. She was also recognised for "using innovative, creative and effective teaching to support and motivate groups or individual learners towards maths skills achievement".

One of Sarah's learners said: "I couldn't have done it without your outstanding teaching. I have actually enjoyed every minute of learning maths whereas before I met you I hated it. You have taught me to love it as well as given me skills for life. I couldn't be more grateful."

The BKSB Skills Awards aims to reward outstanding, pioneering and innovative work in the development of English and Maths skills.
