Plans to extend a Gateshead sawmill - and bring 40 more jobs to Gateshead - have been approved by councillors.

Gateshead Council's Planning and Development Committee has approved a planning application from MH Southern and Co Ltd to extend and modernise their Green Lane Sawmills in Felling.

The company intends to demolish four existing buildings on the site and replace them with a new production building and a new wood treatment building. A third structure for timber storage will also be created and the site will be expanded slightly to the south.

The existing sawmill, which is close to the Gateshead International Stadium, has operated since the 1970s.

There were no objections to the proposals and members of the council's Planning and Development Committee approved the plans at their meeting at Gateshead Civic Centre on Wednesday January 9.
