183 new homes for Gateshead

Planning approval has been granted for 183 new two, three and four bedrooms houses and bungalows in Blaydon.

The £28m scheme which is being developed by Keepmoat Homes in partnership with the Council is being built on a former council estate which has predominantly been demolished. The site will include 170 homes for sales, 10 for rent and three for shared ownership sale, through Gateshead Housing Company.

The project follows the redevelopment of the southern section of the Bleach Green estate by Keepmoat Homes and Yuill Homes around 10 years ago. This latest scheme will complete the redevelopment of the whole estate, significantly enhancing the appeal of Blaydon to home owners. The site is ideally located just a few minutes away from the A1 western bypass and within a mile or so of the Metro Centre. The Blaydon shopping centre is a few minutes' walk away from the site and features Morrisons, Boots, B&M, Costa and a host of other high street names.

Cllr Malcolm Brain, Cabinet member for housing said: "We're looking forward to the construction of these new homes, 27 of which will be classed affordable, getting underway early in the New Year. This is an exciting development for Blaydon. It fulfils the wishes of residents, who will be relieved to see this mostly vacant site come into active use."

Ian Prescott, Land and Partnerships Director at Keepmoat Homes in the North East, said: "In addition to building new houses we're also committed to supporting the communities in which we work which has seen us awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the North East Equality Awards recently. Therefore, as work starts on site in Blaydon in March 2019, we will be working with local providers and partners to create apprenticeship and training opportunities for local people."
