Warning against bogus refund calls

Scam alert

Our Council Tax team have had reports that a company has been calling members of the public to say that they have overpaid their Council Tax and they are contacting them to arrange a refund.

If residents receive a call like this please be aware that this is a scam, all the company is trying to do is get people to reveal their bank details - so they can empty bank accounts.

Gateshead Council would like to remind the public that we would never negotiate overpaid Council Tax through a third party. Any overpayment would either be refunded immediately, or we would formally advise you that you were due a credit.

Darren Collins, Strategic Director for Corporate Resources said, "We have been contacted by a member of the public who had received a telephone call from someone claiming they were a company able to repay credit he was owed on his Council Tax bill.

"They asked that he provide his bank details and thankfully he became suspicious, refused the request and called us. It's vital that if anyone does receive a call that they should not divulge any personal details or disclose any bank details."

Anyone concerned about a possible overpayment, or with any other concerns about Council Tax can contact Gateshead Council on 0191 433 3600 or email: counciltax@gateshead.gov.uk
