Gateshead Council is very saddened to hear of the death of Mike Neville MBE. A man close to the hearts of Gateshead people as a resident and as a Freeman of the Borough.
Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council said: “Mike was known to millions as a TV presenter but was so much more than that to so many people in the North East.
“During his 40 years presenting local news programmes, Mike became the friend in everyone’s living room. With his relaxed and friendly manner which made such a tough job look so easy, he made the programmes his own, but was the ultimate professional.
"We were delighted to honour him with the Freedom of the Borough in 2006. As a long-time Whickham resident and champion of the North East, Mike was a worthy recipient and much loved local personality. He was a North East legend.”
“We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Pam, daughter Carolyn and his four grandchildren, on whom he doted.”
