Road closure at bottom of Blaydon Bank

Posted on Friday 13 October 2017
Northern Gas Networks have alerted Gateshead Council to major gas main works which are due to start on the roundabout at the bottom of Blaydon Bank on Shibdon Road in Blaydon.

The works – which begin on begin on Saturday 21 October - will close the westbound exit of the roundabout – towards the A695 roundabout past the entrance into Blaydon Bus Station –for six days.

This will mean traffic heading down Blaydon Bank will only be able to turn right onto Shibdon Road, not left onto the A695. Traffic lights and a temporary pedestrian crossing will be in operation .

A sign-posted diversion via Shibdon Road and Chainbridge Road will be in operation.

Northern Gas Networks have timed the works to coincide with the school half term in order to minimise disruption to traffic, and say they will endeavour to complete the works ahead of schedule to reduce the impact of traffic in the area.

The road closure will mean buses to Winlaton will be unable to leave Blaydon Bus Station and travel up Blaydon Bank. However, Go North East and Northern Gas Networks are jointly funding a free shuttle bus service between Winlaton and Blaydon throughout the course of the works every 15 minutes.

All road users are advised to allow a little extra time for their journeys, particularly during the morning and evening peak times.
