Posted on Friday 19 May 2017

Residents have rated a Gateshead Council care home as one of the top 20 in North East England – for the third year running.

Shadon House Dementia Resource Centre in Birtley, run by Gateshead Council has been chosen by residents and their families as one of the Top 20 care homes in North East England – no mean feat when there are 802 homes in the region.

Those top 20 have received an award from the leading reviews guide to care homes, and the award is based on reviews of Shadon House written by residents, their friends and relatives.

Joanne Matthewson, Manager at Shadon House, said: “We are very proud to be in the top 20 yet again and would like to thank each and every person for taking the time to complete a review card after or during their stay.”

One of the reviews of Shadon House by a resident’s family member, illustrates how valuable and supportive people find the Centre.

She wrote: ‘I would just like to put on record the outstanding and exceptional service care provided by the staff and management in Shadon House. I have been extremely impressed by the level of continued communication and care provided and the level of dignity shown by all the staff at the home.

“This has been invaluable to me and my family at what is a very stressful time. I would like to commend them for the valuable work they do and congratulate them for the fantastic environment they maintain to help people with dementia. I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for the care they provided for my mam.’

Shadon House provides short stay assessment and respite support to people with a dementia condition, or who have significant memory loss and it offers support for people who struggle to live alone and allows people to live independent lives. It is one of three 'Promoting Independence Centres' and can offer accommodation while allowing service users to meet new people and get involved in daily activities.

People can stay in the centre anywhere from an overnight stay up to a six-week period.  And while they are at Shadon House, they and their families can enjoy lots of facilities including a summer house, multi-sensory garden, cinema, dance hall and bar.

The centre specialises in mental health care and dementia care, as well as physical disabilities and care for older people. It wasrated ‘Outstanding’ after a Care Quality Commission inspection in June last year and has also been a finalist in the ‘Dignity and Respect Care Home of the Year Award.

Davina Ludlow, Director of said: “We feel the best people to rate a care home are the residents and their families and friends. Their reviews reveal that many care homes are warm and happy places to live, where staff members go that extra mile to ensure residents have a good quality of life and feel cared for.

“Shadon House care home proved that they provide a high standard of care and we’d like to congratulate them on being a Top 20 care home in North East England! It’s a wonderful achievement to be recognised for being a highly recommended home by the very people you care for.

“Finding the right care home can be so hard. We hope that our awards will help to make people’s care home search that little bit easier.”
