Gateshead Council is warning motorists to avoid Askew Road between the Redheugh and Tyne Bridges as Northern Gas Networks (NGN) begin emergency gas main replacement works.
NGN is to begin emergency work on Monday, 20th March to replace a leaking gas main at the junction of Askew Road and the approach to the High Level Bridge. This work is expected to last eight weeks and will involve the closure of the adjacent Hill Street, which is heavily used by buses and taxis.
The closure will mean buses that would normally use Hill Street to approach the Tyne Bridge will now be using Askew Road instead, and this is expected to add significantly to the traffic congestion at this point. This section of Askew Road is already heavily congested at peak times.
Motorists are therefore recommended to seek an alternative route to Newcastle while Northern Gas Networks carry out their emergency repairs.
In order to minimise the amount of time the road closure is in place, Gateshead Council has secured NGN’s agreement to work extended hours on this repair work. The council has also been in discussions with Go North East about alternative routes for buses using the Tyne Bridge during this time.
