The last school in Gateshead without a kitchen is finally able to serve its pupils proper home-cooked food.
Previously, pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School in Birtley had eaten meals which had been prepared off site at Glynwood Primary School near the Queen Elizabeth Hospital before being hurried to the school in the back of a van.
However, a £50,000 remodelling of the school’s dining facilities has meant that the school now has its very own school kitchen capable of producing a full daily menu for its 116 pupils plus staff.
Head teacher Christina McDermott says: “Having our own kitchen has made a huge difference to the school. It’s really improved the quality of the meals as they are being cooked fresh, and we can respond to the needs and likes of the children far better.
“It’s no surprise that there’s been a massive increase in uptake in school meals as a result.”
