Gateshead Council has been recognised by the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE) winning the best performing Building Cleaning Service in the UK.
The council’s cleaning service employs 526 people and works in schools, public buildings, housing associations, charities & private businesses across Tyne and Wear.
APSE awards recognise high quality frontline services delivered to local communities by local councils. To win an APSE Performance Network Award, services have to demonstrate that they are value for money whilst also providing high levels of customer satisfaction.
Councillor Catherine Donovan, Deputy Leader of Gateshead Council, said: “We are incredibly proud of this award as our team delivers over 5,500 hours of cleaning services each week and to achieve this success in an industry where customers can be tempted to cut costs is even more satisfying.
We have been able to deliver excellent services thanks to the dedication and commitment of the people who work in this team most of who are Gateshead residents. We believe in the services we provide on a day to day basis but to receive independent recognition is fantastic.”
APSE Chief Executive Paul O’Brien said, “The winners and finalists of these awards are proof that, despite the squeeze of austerity and continuous budget cuts, local councils can still offer excellent frontline services that successfully serve their communities. It is a pleasure to be working with these innovative, determined champions of local government.”
Gateshead Council provides over 5,500 hours of cleaning services each week covering over 240,000m2 of floor space. The Council were also awarded the best performing School Catering Service by APSE.
