Find somewhere to Grow It

Find somewhere to Grow It

Due to the popularity of growing your own most Councils now have long waiting lists for allotments. In Gateshead an allotment review has been carried in an attempt to start to improve allotment provision and to reduce waiting lists.

But full sized allotments| are a large commitment which should not be taken on lightly. For new growers it is advisable to practise your growing at home| in the garden, balcony or back yard first.

There are many community allotment gardens| in Gateshead and new ones are being developed all the time. Some of these have been set up with the support of the Council while some are run by private organisations or charities. Why not volunteer at one of these community gardens where you can get expert advice and training while working. Some community gardens may also be able to provide you with your own allocated area for growing?

Unlike allotments you do not have to be a Gateshead resident or live locally to volunteer in community gardens. If you are happy to volunteer on a regular basis some community gardens even offer travelling expenses and personal protective equipment.

A fourth option for finding a growing space is through a private land sharing agreement. Landshare| is a national scheme which aims to match growers and owners together. Organisations and businesses can also take part in Landshare including the National Trust at Gibside.

Age UK Gateshead have also just started an exciting new Adopt a Garden| scheme in Gateshead matching those who want to grow but have no garden with residents who are no longer able to care for their own gardens.
