Bidding for City Status

Bidding for City Status

MickWe believe Gateshead has what it takes to be named a city and we are proud to be bidding for city status on behalf of the borough.

The competition to create a new city has been announced by the Government as part of next year’s celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The bid will be submitted to the Government by 27th May 2011 and the winner will be announced in 2012.

While being named a city doesn’t bring any extra legal rights, it does carry with it significant prestige and there are lots of examples of how previous winners have attracted investment as a result. Gateshead’s bid to become the next North East city is being drawn up at no extra cost to Council Tax payers.

City status has never been claimed by fulfilling a list of criteria however guidelines on the format and content for entries have been published. Bids will need to focus on:

  1. why the area deserves city status with particular reference to its age, distinct identity, history, traditions, famous residents, any associations with Royalty and any other particularly distinctive featuress
  2. A profile of the area
  3. Up to 50 photographsof permanent features of the area
  4. 2 maps showing the city centre and the main tourist/leisure sites and transport routes

We would like everyone to be ambassadors for Gateshead and support our bid for city status.
