If there is a difference between the tariffs shown online and the tariffs displayed on the machine, the machine display will be correct.

Full guidance regarding payment, the hours of operation and maximum stay periods is provided on the front of the machine and/or on adjacent road signs.  Some of the main rules and concessions which apply are shown below:

  • Motor Cycles may park free of charge in on street parking bays in the Borough.
  • Disabled parking/blue badge holders may park free of charge in all on street parking bays, provided the journey is for the badge holder’s purposes and a valid blue badge is properly displayed and can be clearly seen through the windscreen. The blue badge holder must be present.
  • Only tickets obtained from a machine relating to the bay concerned are valid, and tickets are only valid on the date of issue and for the vehicle for which they were first bought.
  • The pay and display ticket should be displayed face-up in the windscreen where the printed information can be clearly seen. The expiry date and time must always be visible, so always take a moment to check this when leaving your vehicle, especially in windy weather. Failure to follow these instructions may result in a Penalty Charge Notice being issued for not clearly displaying a valid ticket.
  • You must park completely inside the bay markings and you should not use the space unless all of your vehicle can fit inside the bay markings. Any vehicle parked with at least one wheel outside the bay markings may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
  • Some longer streets may have different times and prices in different bays.  Many of these streets also have other types of bay within them (for example “permit parking only” bays).  Again, always check the signs next to the bay in which you are parked and don't assume that your bay is the same as the one in front or behind.
  • You can apply to have a bay suspended in advance. If you park in a suspended bay which has not been reserved for you, you may receive a Penalty Charge Notice.
  • Parking charges and rules apply on public holidays unless signs at the locations state otherwise.

Broken Down Vehicles on Street

If your vehicle has broken down or cannot be moved then you must contact the Council's Parking Services team immediately, giving details of the breakdown and location. This should avoid the vehicle receiving a Penalty Charge Notice. It is not acceptable to report the breakdown after the issue of the PCN unless documentary evidence can be provided and there was a good reason for the delay in letting us know.  Always leave a note on the windscreen, detailing the reason why you cannot move the vehicle and time and date the note. It would be helpful if you also indicate the Council Officer you notified. In any event, broken down vehicles must be recovered within a reasonable period of time.

Out of Order Ticket Machines

If a ticket machine is out of order and there are other machines in the same street (for example, Gateshead High Street) you must purchase a ticket from an alternative machine. Machines do sometimes breakdown and it is not acceptable to use this as an excuse to avoid paying where other machines are available.

If there is only one ticket machine in the street and it is out of order, then always leave a note on the dashboard or windscreen giving as much information as possible to the Civil Enforcement Officer. Always time and date the note. Although a Penalty Charge Notice may still be issued, this evidence will be recorded and can be referred to during any appeal.

If you wish to report a broken down vehicle or an out of order ticket machine in one of our car parks, call 0191 433 3149 (Monday to Friday 8.30am – 4.00pm) or 0191 433 3001 (24 hours, but please note that this is a voicemail which will be accessed daily, except for weekends and public holidays). You can also send an email to p arkingandregulation@gateshead.gov.uk |
