Parking Enforcement in Car Parks

What happens if I park slightly over the bay markings?

As space in all car parks is at a premium you must park completely inside the bay markings. If someone else has parked incorrectly, not leaving enough room for you to use the space beside them, you should not use the space unless all of your vehicle can fit inside the bay markings. You cannot use any area that is not marked as a parking bay. Any vehicle parked with at least one wheel outside the bay markings may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.

What will happen if I do not display a valid disabled badge?

If you park in a disabled bay and you do not display a valid Disabled Badge, you may receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

What happens if I exceed my time limit in a pay and display car park?

If you do not return to move your vehicle before the expiry time displayed on the ticket, a Penalty Charge Notice may be issued.

Displaying the parking ticket

The parking ticket should be displayed in the windscreen or on a prominent location on the dashboard where it is easlily visible from outside. The expiry date and time must always be visible, so always take a second to check this when leaving your vehicle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in a Penalty Charge Notice being issued.

To avoid confusion, please remove all old tickets from the windscreen or dashboard.

What happens if the Pay & Display machine is out of order?

If a ticket machine is out of order and there are other machines in the car park then you must purchase a ticket from an alternative machine. Occasionally machines do breakdown and it is not acceptable to use this as an excuse to avoid paying parking fees.

If there is only one ticket machine in the car park and it is out of order, then always leave a note on the dashboard or windscreen giving as much information as possible to the Civil Enforcement Officer. Always time and date the note.  A Penalty Charge Notice may be issued on such occasions and the machine will be checked. If the machine is found to be faulty at the time the Penalty Charge Notice was issued then it is likely to be withdrawn.

Reporting Faults to Pay and Display machines

If you wish to report a fault on one of the machines or have any enquires regarding the operation of the Council's Pay and Display machines, then call 0191 433 3155 (Monday to Friday 8.30am – 4.00pm) or 0191 433 3001 (Anytime. Please note that this is a Voicemail) or e-mail us at ParkingandRegulation@gateshead.gov.uk|. It would be helpful if you could provide the location of the machine and its reference number (this can be found on a notice on the machine located below the display).

A full list of the parking rules that apply to usage are detailed on signage located in all our car parks. These signs are positioned at the entrance to the car park or/and adjacent to the ticket machines in those car parks that are subject to charges. These signs should be read in conjunction with any notices on the ticket machine. Please remember to check the signs within our car parks before you leave your vehicle unnattended.
