Gateshead Council operate a cycling proficiency scheme every year, between April and October. The scheme is run in local schools and it is aimed at Years 5 and 6 (children aged between 9 and 11 years). There is no charge and all children who successfully complete the scheme receive a pin badge and a certificate.

Schools are responsible for informing parents and carers about the scheme and for obtaining permission for children to take part. All enquiries about when a scheme will be running at a particular school should be made directly to the relevant school.

Any general enquiries about the cycling proficiency scheme should be made to the Road Safety Officer. Information about cycle routes in Gateshead and the region can be obtained by visiting the Cycle Gateshead| web site. For other general information about cycling safety please visit the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents |(RoSPA ) website.
