Gateshead adopted its original Cycling Strategy in 1997 and this was revised in 1998. The targets for both these strategy documents were based on the general target date of 2002, as set in the National Cycling Strategy.
The targets were to:
-
Increase on road cycle lane/route provision from 9km (1997) to 18km (2002).
-
Increase off-road provision by an additional 7km between 1998 and 2002.
-
Increase cycle parking provision from 48 spaces (1997) to 96 spaces (2002).
-
Reduce the number of cycle casualties from 48 (1981 - 85 average) to 32 (2002).
-
Make a contribution to the Government’s National Strategy target of doubling cycling trips by 2002 and achieving a further doubling by 2012.
Progress towards these targets is set out in section 9 of the strategy.
The 1998 Strategy stated that the document would be subject to continuous review, incorporating proposed changes to Government targets for casualty reduction.
This revised strategy document reviews the targets and objectives of the previous version. It incorporates not only the changes to targets for casualty reduction but also alterations to national cycling targets and the cycling measures adopted by the Tyne and Wear local authorities in the Local Transport Plan.
