Purpose and commitment
We started the programme to meet the town twinning commitment of promoting international understanding among young people. This is an opportunity for personal and social growth and education.
The commitment is just under two years and will involve you hosting a two week visit by a Japanese partner this July. You will have a two week visit to Japan in 2018. You will need to:
- attend regular preparation meetings,
- attend activities relating to the exchange
- plan fundraising activities.
Dates of visits and cost
The Komatsu City students will visit 14 July - 28 July 2017. The expected dates for the outward visit are likely to be 14 July - 29 July 2018. These dates may change due to flight arrangements.
There is no direct cost for participating in the programme but you will be expected to take part in fundraising activities.
How does the programme work?
In 2017, if selected to take part in the programme, you will be matched with a partner from Komatsu City. You and your family will provide home-stay for the Komatsu partner and take part in a range of activities throughout the visit. In 2018 you will stay in your partners home in Komatsu City. You will be an ambassador of Gateshead during your visit.
The exchange will involve:
- visiting schools
- sharing cultural activities
- performances as well as a range of educational and cultural learning.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to meet the group leaders for an informal group interview.
Group leaders and co-ordinators will also visit your home to discuss with parents the home visit arrangements.
The selection process will consider the match with students coming from Komatsu City. We will also take into account age, gender and geographical spread.
When will I know if I have been selected and what happens next?
We will make a decision by the end of May 2017 and everyone will be involved by letter.
Komatsu City will provide a photograph and personal profile of your partner. You will be asked to begin communicating with your partner by email before they arrive in Gateshead.
Regular meetings will take place in June and early July to prepare for the visit. Usually every two weeks and on different days to avoid students missing too much of their regular activities.
Parents/guardians will have a full briefing meeting before all visits and activities.
Contact us if you have any questions relating to the exchange.
