Community Legal Advice Centre

Community Legal Advice Centre
Community Legal Advice Centre

Gateshead Council and Legal Services Commission are working in joint partnership to pilot a Community Legal Advice Centre in central Gateshead which will improve people’s access to legal advice. The aim of the Centre is to:

  • Provide FREE face-to-face legal advice – from basic to specialist representation - to help people solve legal problems.
  • Provide education on legal rights so that people can help themselves more.

The Centre will be paid for by Gateshead Council and the Legal Services Commission (who pay now for Legal Aid) and will open Winter 2006/7.

Consultation

We undertook extensive consultation to give everyone the opportunity to contribute their ideas and have their say on this important issue. Key groups were:

  1. Gateshead residents who would use the Centre.
  2. Agencies involved in advice-giving in Gateshead.
  3. Existing suppliers of civil legal aid services in Tyne and Wear

What happens next?

Discussions with our preferred bidder ended successfully and the contract for the Gateshead Community Legal Advice Centre has been awarded to a joint bid from Gateshead Law Centre and Gateshead Citizens Advice Bureau.
