Vitality Index
The Gateshead Vitality Index uses a statistical modelling technique to identify and monitor quality of life within the borough. 85 neighbourhoods| have been defined geographically across the whole of Gateshead, with other potential neighbourhoods being closely monitored. These incorporate over 98% of households in Gateshead. The Index ranks the neighbourhoods in Gateshead on the basis of quality of life indicators grouped into six domains - Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour, Education, Health, Housing, Income and Worklessness.
It uses a similar methodology to the Indices of Multiple Deprivation ( IMD ) 2007. Unlike the IMD, the Vitality Index is updated annually enabling trends to be examined. This intelligence can be used to gain an understanding of the needs of neighbourhoods, to identify local priorities and to inform Council policy.
From 2009 onwards, the Vitality Index uses a slightly different method to that of previous years and includes new indicators in some of the domains. Because of this change, trend data is not currently available. To find out more on the methodology behind the creation of the Vitality Index and weights used in each domain, please read the following document:
