Unemployment
There are three key unemployment measures:
The first measure is working age claimant unemployment (the proportion of working age people that are claiming jobseekers allowance benefit). This is used to measure the National Indicators NI152 and NI153 that appear within the Gateshead Agreement (Gateshead's Local Area Agreement) and as such is often quoted within the Council.
The second measure is extracted from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and shows the number of people surveyed who said that they were unemployed as a proportion of those who said that they were economically active. This rolling quarterly unemployment measure is currently being quoted in the media. Unfortunately, there is no comparable data for Gateshead. Only a rolling annual measure is available for Gateshead.
The third measure is economically active claimant unemployment (the proportion of economically active people that are claiming jobseekers allowance benefit). This is the most useful measure of unemployment available for Gateshead wards. Comparisons can be made with districts, regions and the UK.
