Gateshead and Ward Factsheets

Gateshead & Ward Factsheets

Gateshead is a constantly changing borough, which combines modern facilities with a fascinating heritage. Set in the bustling conurbation of Tyneside, the borough stretches almost 13 miles along the south bank of the River Tyne and covers 55 square miles, making it the largest of the five Tyne and Wear authorities.

Gateshead is a borough of contrasts. Around half of the borough is rural but it also has a large urban centre. Gateshead hosts a mix of urban areas such as Felling, Dunston and Blaydon, busy commercial and industrial areas such as Team Valley, and rural areas such as Ryton, Whickham and Derwent Valley.
