Refugee and Asylum Support Service
The Gateshead Council Asylum and Refugee Team is one of ten Local Authorities in the North East offering support to asylum seekers and refugees and is a member of NECARS NECARS (North East Consortium for Asylum and Refugee Support).
The team provides two main services:
This service supports asylum seekers from their dispersal to Gateshead until they receive a positive or negative decision from the Home Office. The team is responsible for supporting asylum seekers who are housed in council accommodation in Gateshead.
Each new arrival is allocated a named worker to support them throughout their stay in Gateshead. The team can also offer advice to other asylum seekers living in the area or refer to other agencies if appropriate. Support offered includes:

Assistance to register with a GP (doctor), dentist, optician, children’s health clinic

Assistance to register at college

Assistance to arrange crèche/nursery for children

Contact list for legal advice

Reporting system for racist incidents

Advice on reporting housing repairs

A listening ear

What is the Move On Service?
The Move On Service was established by Gateshead Council in January 2003. The service helps refugees to:

The Move On Service is part of Gateshead Council’s Housing Services and is located in Community Based Services at Gateshead Council’s Civic Centre. There are 3 Refugee Support Workers on the team.
