Equality and Diversity Home
Every person in Gateshead matters and the Council welcomes the fact that society consists of many diverse groups and individuals. The diversity of our communities is an asset to the borough which brings a vibrancy to life in Gateshead. We are committed to best practice in equalities and diversity in Gateshead, and ensuring that all residents have equal access to the opportunities the borough provides regardless of race, faith, disability, gender, sexual orientation or age.
In addition, we know that different issues affect people in different ways, depending on where they live in the borough. We are addressing this through our neighbourhood management approach to local governance, which is part of a long-term plan in Gateshead to ensure local services are coordinated around the needs of individual neighbourhoods.
Equality Strategy
Following a recent "equalities audit" and ongoing consultation with residents, the Council is now developing an Equality Strategy which will set out specific equalities priorities for 2006/07 and beyond. This will involve wide consultation with Members, stakeholders, service users and employees. The Equality Strategy will play a major role in the Council’s plans to improve services and develop its workforce.
