Gender Equality Scheme 2007-10
This is Gateshead's first Gender Equality Scheme effective from 30 April 2007 until April 2010.
The scheme sets out how the council will promote gender equality in Gateshead and eliminate harassment and discrimination for those that use our services and for council employees.
The Gender Equality Scheme will help the council to meet its responsibilities under the Gender Equality Duty, which comes into force in April 2007. The Duty places the responsibility on the Council to demonstrate that men and women are treated fairly and without discrimination or harassment.
The council has set five overall outcomes following consultation for Gateshead:
-
Women and men are able to access better quality services and support networks that meet their different needs;
-
Decision-making and policy development is better informed and more effective in addressing gender equality needs for both service users and employees;
-
Consultation is directly targeted at the needs of individuals and communities and effectively engages with both women and men;
-
A safe borough where violence and harassment is not tolerated;
-
The Council has a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community it serves and makes effective use of talent in the workplace.
We have also written an action plan to help us focus on these key outcomes.
We will be consulting with residents, trade unions, community and voluntary groups as well as our partners and employees, and will enhance the scheme based on the consultation.
Progress will be reported annually while the scheme itself will be reviewed after three years.
