Gateshead Black and Minority Ethnic Workers Group

The Gateshead Black and Minority Ethnic Workers Group (GBMEWG ) has been established to develop a collective, co-ordinated response and resource for influencing organisational strategies, policies and procedures for promoting racial equality, and tackling racial discrimination and institutionalised racism.

The aim of the GBMEWG is to make an effective contribution towards promoting racial equality and progressing anti-racist policies and practices in employment, and the delivery of services to black and minority ethnic communities.

Aims and objectives:

  • To collectively work towards promoting racial equality and the elimination of racial discrimination
  • To provide an overview of racial equality issues and to identify and address shortfall in policies, practices , procedures and strategies
  • To develop mechanisms and communications channels to provide feedback about issues affecting black and minority ethnic employees
  • To advocate for a more inclusive and holistic organisational culture that gains strength from cultural diversity
  • To collectively raise awareness and challenge institutionalised racism and highlight action to be taken
  • To foster an environment where group members have the professional support  and space to communicate freely about racial equality issues without fear of reprisal
  • To facilitate better communication amongst black and minority ethnic workers and to contribute towards creating a positive equality culture within the Council
  • To integrate the issues and strategies proposed by the GBMEWG into the mainstream work carried out by the Council

The GBMEWG will meet on a monthly basis, all black and minority ethnic will have automatic membership, all issues raised will be treated in the strictest  confidence, and we will operate in accordance with, and encourage high standards of behaviour and practice, by demonstrating commitment to the group’s aims and objectives.
