Gateshead Volunteers' Month

June 2017

This is our fifth year celebrating the fantastic contribution made by all the volunteers of Gateshead. As usual throughout June, there’s lots going on to whet your appetite and encourage you to take that first step to becoming a volunteer for Gateshead.

Details of volunteering events and activities across the borough are given below together with contact information for the organisers.

Saturday 3,10, 17 and 24 June, 10am-2pm
Volunteer Task day – Felling Park and Town Centre
The Friends of Felling Park and Town Centre deliver a task day every Saturday to welcome any volunteers along to the area to undertake activities to improve the park and town centre.

Monday 5, 12, 19 and 26 June, 4-5.30pm
Bingo Session and Food, Angel Court – Information on volunteer opportunities
Angel Court will be hosting a bingo and food session on Monday afternoon each week. The event will be an opportunity to meet residents from the sheltered scheme and for members of the public to volunteer their time to get involved. You could come along as a “one off” and help with bingo calling or chatting with residents, or find out how to become involved as a longer term volunteer and the activities and opportunities that are available.

Coffee Morning drop in session – Information on volunteer opportunities
Bensham Court Sheltered Accommodation Scheme, NE8 1XY is hosting coffee morning drop in sessions.  The event gives you the opportunity to meet residents from the sheltered scheme and to find out more about volunteering whether that’s as a “one off” for one week helping with the coffee morning or chatting with residents, or as a longer term volunteer.

Tea and Coffee Morning drop in session – Information on volunteer opportunities
Harrison Court Sheltered Accommodation Scheme, Birtley, DH3 2PE is hosting tea and coffee morning drop in sessions.  The event gives you the opportunity to meet residents from the sheltered scheme and to find out more about volunteering whether that’s as a “one off” for one week helping with the coffee morning or chatting with residents, or as a longer term volunteer.

Friendship Group for residents– Information on volunteer opportunities
Kay Cottages Sheltered Accommodation Scheme, Gateshead, NE10 9ST is hosting Friendship Group sessions. The event gives you the opportunity to meet residents from the sheltered scheme and to find out more about volunteering whether that’s as a “one off” for one week helping with the coffee morning or chatting with residents, or as a longer term volunteer.

Tuesday 6 June, 11am-1pm
Gateshead College volunteer event
Gateshead College have invited a range of volunteer role providers, including Gateshead Council, Age UK and other organisations to come along to Gateshead College to explain the new and exciting volunteer roles available for young people. The event, which is open to all, will also explain the benefits of volunteering and explain the impact it has. At Gateshead College, Baltic Campus, Quarryfield Road, NE8 3BE.

Tuesday 6 June, 10am-2pm
Volunteer Task day – Wildlife Zone at Springwell Community Memory Garden
Local charity, Silverline Memories, is creating a Wildlife Zone at Springwell Community Memory Garden. With the help of volunteers it aims to create new pathways, planting areas, and seating. Paths will also be created to ensure wheelchair accessibility, as well as a piece of atwork that will become the name sign for the Garden. If you are interested please sign up now.

Tuesday 6 June, 12.30-2pm
Wellbeing event held at Skills 4 Work (Gateshead)
The charity is holding a wellbeing event at Fusion Studio, Harris Bank, Birtley showcasing the work of its members and how its volunteers support young people and the charity in general.  It offers you the opportunity to meet existing volunteers and learn first-hand about their experiences, training and in some cases employment as a result of their volunteering.  We also welcome new volunteers to help run our Community Café that runs two afternoons per month. Please come along on the day you will be made very welcome.

Pie and Peas Bingo session - Angel Court
Angel Court Sheltered Accommodation Scheme, Waverley Road, NE9 7TG
This event will be delivered by the restaurant that is based within Angel Court Sheltered Accommodation scheme. The restaurant is a friendly community atmosphere with food and fun.

7, 8, 9,12, 13, 15 and 16 June
CPR training sessions for all through the Gateshead Housing Company Sheltered Accommodation schemes

Through equipment supplied by the British Heart Foundation, the Gateshead Housing Company will be delivering CPR sessions with residents and volunteers. All volunteers are welcome. Included below is a list of the full sessions, a location and a time.

Knit & Knatter Group – Information on volunteer opportunities
Greensfield Sheltered Accommodation Scheme NE40 3BJ is hosting Knit & Knatter group sessions where you can meet residents from the sheltered scheme and find out more about volunteering whether that’s a “one off” for one week chatting with residents while they undertake some knitting, or as a longer term volunteer.

Saturday 10 June, 1-3pm
Peace of Mind: Volunteer Celebration event
Peace of Mind volunteers are made up of members of the asylum seeker and refugee community and local people. The group is hosting a Volunteer Celebration Day as a formal “thank you” followed by a lunch, volunteers sharing what they gain from volunteering and an opportunity to network.

Local and Family History Day for Carers
Give yourself a break and relax while experts at Gateshead Central Library guide you through historic maps, photographs and other resources to get you started. This event is part of Gateshead Carers’ Week – please book in advance, limited availability.

Carers Books on Prescription Launch
Come along Gateshead Central Library to see some of the new titles, pick up a book list for yourself or someone you know. Tea, coffee and cake available. This event is part of Gateshead Carers’ Week Open event, all welcome.

Wednesday 14 June, 11am-2pm
Party in the Park, Gateshead Carers Week, Saltwell Park
Join Gateshead Carers for its annual Party in The Park, Pets’ Corner, Saltwell Park. Enjoy a wide variety of information and support stalls, health and wellbeing activities, live music and sample the delights from the Samosa Sisters and Food Nation. Bring your pooch along and enter Scrufts Dog Show,with prizes to be won. This event is part of Gateshead Carers’ Week. Open event, all welcome.

Thursday 15 June
Birtley Hub, Volunteer drop in sessions
The group will be hosting two volunteer drop in sessions at The Hub Resource Centre, 16 Harraton Terrace, Birtley, DH3 2QG. The sessions will take place from 10am-2pm and 5-7 pm. Just call into the centre and find out what the group provides as an organisation and what being a volunteer with Birtley Hub entails.  During the sessions other volunteers will be on hand to give further insight and to answer any questions. Refreshments will be available throughout the sessions.

Thursday 15 June, 10am-1.30pm
Artful Codgers volunteer event at Shipley Art Gallery
The event will include 10 residents (7 wheel chair users and 3 independent) from Winton Court Care Home and 42 Year 4 primary school children. The event will provide an opportunity for new volunteers to support the residents to take park in a workshop based on The Blaydon Races at the Shipley Art Gallery. The workshops will include looking at famous characters from around Tyneside and will be led by the Shipley staff. Volunteers will be needed to help guide residents around the exhibition and to help facilitate conversation and encourage engagement. The Mayor will be attending the event at 12.15pm and will do a speech about the event and the benefits of volunteering.

Friday 16 June, 10am-2pm
Changing lives - volunteer promotional event
Changing lives will be at a stall in Trinity Square handing out flyers, application forms and details around the volunteer roles available within their organisation. The event will showcase the difference volunteers can make to their community. There will be six current volunteers available on the day for you to talk to about their experiences.

Friday 16 June, 1-4.30pm
Midsummer Madness Afternoon
At Leam Lane Bowling Club, Oliver Henderson Park, NE10 8DX. Organised by Leam Lane Bowling Club and Gateshead Indoor Bowling Club.
1pm: Bowling for all, a fun competition
2.30pm: Homemade strawberry cream tea, homemade cakes, scones, tea and coffee  
3.30pm: Bingo
There will also be a presentation of prizes for the best costume and bowling winners.

21st BBQ Celebration – Gateshead Carers Allotment
Join Gateshead Carers for their 21st allotment BBQ for delicious food, great company and a chance to sample some of the harvest! In order to attend this event you will need to ring ahead and book.

Saturday 17 June, 10am-3pm
The Teams Festival, Eslington Park
The Teams Festival will feature a range of activities with over 70 people volunteering their time. Open to all, it allows local people to contribute to their community and will also be used to recruit more volunteers. Gateshead Redheugh 1957 are hosting the event which will feature stalls, displays, bouncy castles, bands, Plus birds of prey, a football tournament.

Saturday 17 June, 10am-4pm
Friends of Felling Park and Town Centre, community celebration event
The group are hosting a community celebration event to show what it has achieved since it was set up in October 2016. The event is part of the national Great Get Together initiative and will involve people from all over the local community including schools, community centres, groups and sheltered accommodation schemes. A buffet will be provided. People attending will also have the chance to experience volunteering by helping to plant over 2,000 flowers. At Felling Bowling Green NE10 9DS.

Saturday 17 June, 11am-4pm
Neighbourhood Community Fair Day
Come along to a Neighbourhood Community Fair in and around the Whitehills Community Centre.  The day will offer a variety of activities, particularly for young people and families.  Entertainment includes a local comedian, free bouncy castle, face painting, games, music, entertainment and various stalls. Information will also be available on all the voluntary and community groups based at the Community Centre and the volunteer opportunities available for these groups.

Your Voice Counts
During Thursday 22 June, Your Voice Counts, an organisation that helps support people with learning disabilities, is holding a promotional event in Saltwell Park.

Volunteer Drop in Session, Gateshead Sight Service
A drop in session at the Bradbury Centre for Sight NE10 0HW will provide information on what is involved in becoming a Sight Service volunteer. Staff will be on hand throughout the session to share details of the group’s latest volunteer opportunities. All welcome.

Thursday 22 and 29 June
Volunteer event, painting and tidying of communal space and chicken keep area
The Woodgreen Sheltered Accommodation residents group will be holding two “get-together” days to celebrate the achievements of its volunteers and to encourage new membership. The activities during the events will include a deep clean, painting of the hen coops, erecting swings for the hens, as well as painted raised beds and upgrading the area. There will also be a communal, celebratory meal for all involved. At Woodgreen Sheltered Accommodation, Bill Quay, Gateshead, NE10 0ST.

One Great Day - charity event, Family Fun Day, Trinity Square
Come along to Trinity Square for the “One Great Day” event. The event will raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Tiny Lives. Groups and organisations are invited to come along and join in on the day. Activities include face painting, Punch and Judy, Tombola, children’s arts and crafts and live music.

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June
Rugby Force Workshop – Winlaton Vulcans Rugby Football Club
Axwell View Playing Fields, Winlaton, NE21 6NF.
As part of the ongoing British and Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand we intend to serve breakfast and watch the Test Match on the big screen.  After the match we hope to retain the spectators/volunteers after the game to carry on with NatWest Rugby Force Weekend and get involved in the tasks of painting/cleaning and other projects in and around the Club.
The Club opens at 8am on Saturday 24 June with the day’s volunteering finishing off with a BBQ and refreshments. If there is enough support we intend to carry on Sunday.

Thursday 29 June, 7pm
Community litter Pick in Gateshead Avenues
Volunteers are needed to help out in the local neighbourhood with litter picking. Everyone is welcome - the more the merrier. Litter pickers, bags and gloves are all provided. Anyone who is interested in taking park on the day please meet at the entrance to Saltwell Park facing the Little Theatre.
