Community Links Volunteers
Community Links volunteers

Gateshead Council run the Community Links Service with the help of volunteers. The scheme provides support to adults with learning disabilities so they can join in their local communities, take part in events and join in leisure activities.

It's also a great opportunity for people to come together and make new friends.

How can I help?

Just a few hours of your time each month could support someone to achieve a fulfilling life in their community.

Whether it's joining someone down the pub, visiting the
cinema or sharing a hobby or interest you'll be taking the first step together to making a difference.

Volunteers offer their support on a one to one basis or in small groups.

There are lots of ways you can get involved. Below are just some of the activities on offer:

  • Using computers and IT;
  • Craft sessions;
  • Cookery;
  • Gardening;
  • Table games like dominoes;
  • Health walks;
  • Going out and about in thecommunity;
  • Drop in groups.

Some volunteers just come along to have a chat and help out with refreshments.

What do I get from volunteering?

Community Links volunteers join the scheme for different
reasons. Some volunteers feel that the experience they gain will help them follow a similar career or college course. Many volunteers enjoy the socialising and meeting new friends.
