Cleaner Safer Greener Grants

Safer Stronger Communities Fund

  • Do you want to improve your local environment by making it cleaner safer and greener?
  • Do you want to tidy up a derelict or unsightly piece of land by, for example, creating a tree garden, woodland paths, and hedge planting?
  • Want to create a small wildlife area, green a churchyard, create a small local park or hold a community wildlife survey?
  • How about a water conservation scheme, creating a small community pond, or local stream improvements?
What to set up a children’s environmental group or hold an Eco-carnival?
  • Or are you interested in a small renewable energy scheme?

Then here's your chance to put your idea into practice.

Applications are invited from community groups (existing or one set up to do the proposed project) for environmental projects which meet the conditions set by the grant scheme.

Who is eligible to apply?

Voluntary and Community Sector Groups and Social Enterprises who operate in the borough of Gateshead and whose activities and services benefit the people of Gateshead whether they are constituted or not.

What can groups apply for?

Requests for funding are for capital projects only, such as hire of equipment, purchase of plants, purchase of path materials, up to a maximum of £5,000.

Grants funding will not be approved for costs which have already taken place(before the date of approval) or for costs that are towards political or religious activities. Groups can only apply for one grant each financial year.

Application Process

All applicants requesting grant support must complete and sign a standard grant application form. This enables Gateshead Council to ensure its grants programme is fair and transparent. The form will be assessed against how it fits with Gateshead Safer Stronger Communities Fund - Safer, Cleaner Greener Element. Applications will then be considered by Gateshead Environment Partnership.

Applicants will usually be informed of a decision within 6 weeks of the application deadline.

Application Deadlines

This grants programme in 2006/07 will operate 2 application rounds. Each round has a specified application deadline and decision date. Only applications received by 5pm on the deadline will be considered at each round.

Round Deadline Approx Decision Date
Round 1 22 August 2006 13 September 2006
Round 2 24 October 2006 14 November 2006
