Gateshead Goes Local - Community Led Local Development Programme

CLLDWebLogosIn April 2016 partners from across Gateshead were successful in accessing support from the European Structural Investment Funds to develop a Local Development Strategy to highlight the local barriers that residents of central Gateshead face in return to work or enterprise.

In October 2016 permission was given to prepare a detailed proposal for partners to develop a Local Action Group to manage a delegated grants programme to match fund local initiatives that would help deliver the aspirations of the Strategy. The bid for £2.2m of European funding has now been successful. Gateshead Council will be the programmes Accountable Body.

Proposals would need to ensure that they deliver the objectives of the  Local Development Strategy (3Mb) and meet ERDF/ESF objectives. Grants of £20,000 and £200,000 will be available.

All projects will need to provide match funding to be supported;

  • 50% for potential ESF projects (supporting individuals)
  • 40% for ERDF projects (helping with business start-ups or offering business space).

First stage

The first stage of the programme will be a call out to all organisations, local community groups, training organisations, colleges, employers or the voluntary sector, to come forward with their ideas on how they could support people into work or enterprise in early 2018.

Each proposal will be considered by the newly formed Local Action Group. This includes people and organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

To help you complete an accurate application we are holding workshops across the borough designed to give you an insight into the process. These start with a launch event at Gateshead College. For further information and to register for the launch or a workshop use the relevant link.

Gateshead CLLD wards are: Dunston and Teams, Bridges, Felling, Pelaw and Heworth, Wardley and Leam Lane, Windy Nook and Whitehills, High Fell, Chowdene, Low Fell, Deckham, Saltwell and Lobley Hill and Bensham.

The area covers most of central Gateshead, stretching along the southern banks of the River Tyne from Dunston to Pelaw, encompassing the town centre and south to Chowdene. The total population is around 105,000. The area was chosen due to high levels of disadvantage and the proximity to key employment centres including Team Valley Trading Estate, central Newcastle and Follingsby.

Community Led Local Development is intended to:

  • encourage local communities to develop integrated bottom-up approaches in circumstances where there is a need to respond to territorial and local challenges calling for structural change
  • build community capacity and stimulate innovation (including social innovation), entrepreneurship and capacity for change by encouraging the development and discovery of untapped potential from within communities and territories
  • promote community ownership by increasing participation within communities and build the sense of involvement and ownership that can increase the effectiveness of EU policies; and
  • assist multi-level governance by providing a route for local communities to fully take part in shaping the implementation of EU objectives in all areas.
