The Gateshead Domestic Abuse Directory is a reference point for information about domestic abuse services in Gateshead. Gateshead Domestic Violence Partnership produced the directory.
Gateshead Domestic Violence Partnership
The Partnership was established in 1995. It brings together a wide range of agencies within Gateshead who provide services to those affected by domestic abuse.
The Partnership is committed to try and improve services, raise awareness and enhance the protection, justice and support for victims and their children as well as working on prevention and intervention with those responsible for the abuse.
Domestic Abuse
Domestic Abuse is defined by the Partnership as "the use of violence to gain power over, dominate or control a partner or ex-partner." It can take many forms, such as physical assault, sexual abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, threats, destructive criticism, pressure tactics, disrespect, harassment, isolation and financial abuse. It is also commonly a combination of all these.
Domestic abuse is widespread, nationally and internationally and is experienced across every section of society regardless of social group, ethnic background, age, disability, sexuality or religion. Its effects are profoundly damaging for individuals, families and society as a whole.
About this Directory
The directory is intended for use by women and men who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse. It will also help professional workers who provide advice and support to make effective referrals to other agencies.
How to use the Directory
The entries have been divided into five sections. Local organisations are listed in alphabetical order in each section. A limited collection of national contacts is also included. This is in no way comprehensive but the aim of the Directory is to concentrate on local or at least regional services.
Each entry gives a brief description of the service an organisation provides along with, wherever possible, contact details, opening times and referral methods.
