Key Terms Explained

 
   

This page explains some of the key terms relating to child and family poverty.

Aspirations A will to succeed, to want better for yourself and your family
Environmental Factors A person’s social environment includes their living and working conditions, income level, educational background and the communities they are part of
Material Deprivation Material Deprivation is the lack of money and what money can buy. This would mean a lack of money to pay for school trips, school uniforms, school equipment etc. Anything that a child might need in their school or home life that involves money or things that need to be bought with money
Material Resources Possessions, things you own.
Needs Assessment A study of current needs in Gateshead, to identify what needs to be introduced (by Gateshead Council and it’s partners) to improve poverty
Strategy A strategy refers to a plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal
